Addiction Treatment Program in Texas
Home -- Frequently Asked Questions
WHO ARE WE?
We and our parent, the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center of Bexar County, Texas, Inc., are the oldest residential substance abuse treatment center in South Texas. In the 44 years since our founding in 1963, we have been successfully treating those who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse and dependency. Lifetime Recovery is a nonprofit corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC, is licensed as a treatment provider by the Texas Department of State Health Services, and is a United Way Agency.
WHY ARE WE HERE?
Substance abuse is the primary health issue in our community. It increasingly devastates individuals and families, and swamps emergency rooms with patients suffering from overdoses, alcohol poisoning, diabetes, heart attacks, liver and kidney failure and respiratory diseases resulting from chemical abuse and addiction. The vast number of traffic fatalities in our area is attributable to drunk drivers, and in more than 90% of child abuse cases in the local courts, substance abuse is a major factor.
WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?
The vast majority of clients come from San Antonio, but Lifetime Recovery has alumni in well over 150 cities across Texas. Our clients are self-identified, referred through the justice system, as well as by hospitals, doctors, psychologists, pastors, families, friends, and recovery programs. While funded treatment is available for the medically indigent, due to our reasonable cost for service, an increasing number are funded by private means. Lifetime Recovery is rapidly becoming an alternative for those citizens who need treatment but cannot afford the rates of commercial centers.
HOW MANY CAN WE SERVE?
Lifetime Recovery serves some 600 clients annually, seeing 300 in residential treatment and 300 in outpatient treatment. With additional funding, we can do more.
WHAT DO WE DO?
Lifetime Recovery works to restore to productive, healthy lives those who suffer from dependence on a variety of substances, including alcohol, heroin, opiates, cocaine in its several forms, and narcotics and methamphetamines now prevalent among abusers. Potential clients in need of detoxification undergo that treatment elsewhere before coming to the Lifetime Recovery Treatment Center to enter the program.
HOW DO WE DO IT?
The Lifetime Recovery Chemical Dependency Treatment Center maintains two primary programs for adult men and women and their families. They are:
The residential program for men consists of a 90-day regimen that combines cognitive, motivational and 12-step techniques to help clients restructure their lives and return to a healthy, productive lifestyle without drugs or alcohol. Residents progress through a 30-day intensive program of individual and group therapy plus classes in the nature and dangers of addictive disease. In the next, supportive residential phase, clients continue to live at the Center, seek and maintain employment, and engage in therapy and instruction every evening.
The outpatient program provides individual, family and group counseling in the daytime and evening hours to adult men and women and their families. This program is five months in duration, and can be a free-standing program as well as an intensive aftercare program for those men who have completed treatment at the residential facility.
HOW DO WE KNOW WE’RE SUCCESSFUL?
Our clients continue to exceed targets set by the State of Texas for program completion and post-treatment abstinence. Currently, 75% of our residential clients complete the program, and of those who complete, 85% remain abstinent when contacted 90 days after treatment discharge. The outpatient clients’ 5-month program completion rate is 56% (target is 50%), of which 84% maintain abstinence when surveyed 90 days after discharge.
